Torquay’s beaches are second to none, with surfing, fishing, windsurfing and other water sports on the list of must do. Torquay has been a holiday resort since the late 19thC and is similar to English seaside resorts with shady trees and large grassed areas. Take one of the many walks along the beach sand, cliff tops and bush land, pick up a walking brochure at the VIC (Visitor Information Centre). Small shopping precincts include eateries, galleries, boutiques and classy gift shops. On the main highway the large surfing icons have retail outlets, together with a surfing museum. The Torquay Sundial is a colourful 8m diameter mosaic masterpiece, depicting traditional Koori dreaming stories, with over 120,000 glass Tesserae tiles, at the end of Darian Rd, Fishermen’s Beach.
Jan Juc, just over Spring Creek, is home to another surf beach, and many quality holiday accommodation and permanent homes.
A little further on is Bells Beach, home to the Rip Curl Pro surfing classic held at Easter. Walk down the steps to the sand or view the breaks from the cliff top car park.
The small country towns Bellbrae and Freshwater Creek are only a few kms inland. Picnic (BBQ’s provided), playground and sporting oval. Holiday accommodation features farmstays and B&B’s.
